Circana gives us weekly data for Dollar Sales, Units, and Volume. Then, the CMA uses those numbers to calculate Price per Unit and Price per Case.
How is Price per Unit calculated?
In Circana data, 1 “Unit” = one scan for whatever the UPC represents. So, if a UPC represents a 6pk, every time that 6pk scans it adds one “Unit” to the data. To calculate Price per Unit, that 6pk’s dollar sales are divided by the number of units sold.
How is Price per Case calculated?
In Circana data, 1 point of “Volume” = a standard “case” equivalent (a case equivalent is 288oz in the beer category). A 6pk of 12oz cans of beer accrues 72oz each time it scans. When the 6pk has scanned four times, it has accrued 288oz and one point of Volume is added to the data. To calculate Price per Case, the 6pk’s dollar sales are divided by its points of volume.
