How is "Brand Level Total Points of Category Weighted Distribution" Calculated and What is it Used For?

"Brand Level Total Points of Category Wtd Dist" is a measure found on the C&R dashboard which can provide a sense of distribution depth for a brand or a brand family.

The Brand Level Total Points of Category Wtd Dist measure is found on the “C&R” dashboard (just to the left of the Calculated Price per Unit and Calculate Price per Case columns). It's one of several measures which can be used to gain a sense of distribution depth for a brand or a brand family. Like CWD (Max), Brand Level Total Points of Category Wtd Dist also uses a "Max" calculation (more about what this means below).

The usefulness of this measure is found at the Brand level or Brand Family level, where higher numbers can indicate that a higher number of SKUs are in distribution, meaning that a brand or brand family is seeing good distribution as a whole.

At the SKU level, an item's Brand Level Total Points of Category Wtd Dist value will be the same as is CWD (Max) value (but may be rounded down to zero if the item has a CWD (Max) value of less than .5%). The image below shows three different package types for the same IPA brand, selling in Illinois-Multi Outlet in a 4-week time period:

So, if Brand Level Total Points of Category Wtd Distr shows the same value as CWD (Max) at the SKU level, how does it work at the Brand level?

To begin, what does the word “Max” indicate in CWD (Max)? It means that when looking at a span of weeks (our selected time period), the CWD % for the entire span of weeks is equal to the highest weekly CWD percentage amongst those weeks.  CWD (Max) reflects a brand family, brand, or SKU's maximum weekly CWD within the chosen time period, drawing its percentage from whichever week in the time period had the highest CWD%.

We can see in the chart above that a single "IPA" brand is selling with three different package sizes, a 6pk, 12pk, and single 19.2oz can. The chart is breaking these out into separate rows, because the brand level is set to "SKU". The 6pk has 77 Total Points of CWD,  the 12pk has 54 Total Points of CWD, and the single 19.2oz can has 36 Total Point of CWD . To understand how Total Points of CWD are calculated at the brand level for this brand, let’s look at the CWD percentages for these three IPA SKUs in a week-by-week breakdown of the four weeks contained this 4-week time period. Note that, when including all three items to capture this IPA brand as a whole, the grand total column for each week is simply using the highest CWD percentage amongst the three items for that week. Thus, the highest grand total is recorded in Circana week ending 11-27-22, with a grand total of 77.43. For this reason, the week of 11-27-22 will be the week used to sum up the CWD for each of these SKUs to calculate Total Points of CWD for this IPA brand as a whole:

So, returning to the C&R dashboard and switching to the brand level, if we look at the Total Points of CWD for this IPA brand as a whole, the chart below shows 167 Total Points of CWD for this brand (a sum of 77.43 + 53.62 + 35.92), rounded to a whole number:

Total Points of CWD for an entire brand family is calculated in the same way. Looking at every one of the brand family's SKUs, the calculation identifies the week in the time period which contains the highest SKU level CWD. Then, it sums up the CWD percentages in that single (Max) week for all of the brand family's SKUs  to arrive at the Brand Level Total Points of Category Wtd Distr for the brand family as a whole.
