When 6pks or 4pks move from PakTech to Cardboard, they generally get a new UPC. In Circana data, the old UPC on the can and the new UPC on the cardboard will then break out separately at the SKU level. How can we combine the dollars for both?
In the past ten years or so, many suppliers have switched from packaging cans in PakTeck rings to cardboard wraps. When this happens, the new UPC being used on the cardboard is added to Circana data as a new item. The UPC on the single can may still continue to collect sales. Some retailers may open boxes and sell some the cans as singles. Additionally, it often takes a long time before Circana recodes the SKU for the UPC on the single can as a 1ct, meaning there will be two 6ct 12oz can UPCs for the same brand in the data.
If you'd prefer to see the single can UPC and the 6pk UPC for the same brand combined as one bar in a ranker bar chart (combining the historical 6pk sales from the Paktech with new sales from the cardboard UPC), begin by switching your BRAND LEVELS parameter to "Brand":
Then, you'll have all package versions for that brand rolled into a single bar on the chart.
Next, use the PACKAGE SIZE GROUP filter to eliminate every package types which isn't "5-6pk 11-13oz":
If the brand you're wishing to examine is selling in both a 6pk of cans and a 6pk of bottles, use the PACKAGE TYPE filters to filter out bottles, so you'll only be seeing dollars for 6pks of cans.
Now, you will see the dollars for any brand as a single bar in the chart, but the bar will only be showing you dollars from items which are coded as 6pks of cans. So, if you have two items for the same brand coded as 6ct 12oz cans, that bar on the chart will be showing you the combined dollars for the PakTech 6pk and the cardboard 6pk.
Keep in mind that if Circana eventually recodes the UPC on the single can as "1ct", you'll then need to select "singles 11-13oz" as well as "5-6pk 11-13oz" in the PACKAGE SIZE GROUP filter in order to combine the historical sales for the PakTech 6pk with the new sales for the cardboard 6pk.
These steps could be replicated in the "C&R" dashboard as well, if you'd prefer that to the bar chart rankers.
