In Circana Data, What Do Volume and Units Signify?

Volume is calculated using "Case Equivalents", and is calculated slightly differently for the beer category than for wine and spirits categories. Units are calculated in the same way across all three categories.

In Circana's beer category, one point of Volume = 288oz (which is a "case equivalent", in the world of beer). The total ounces for each UPC are coded and linked to the UPC, so each time that UPC scans, its total ounces are added to the tally. When that tally reaches 288oz, a point of volume is added to the data for that UPC. Here’s a list of what is equal to a single point of volume in the various Circana categories:

Beer = 1 case (24ct, 12oz = 288oz)
Wine = 1 case (12ct, .75LT = 9 liters)*
Spirits = 1 case (12ct, .75LT = 9 liters)*

*Please note that in Spirits and Wine Data, Volume for RTDs (Premixed Cocktails and Seltzers) equals 24ct, 12oz = 288oz.

Units are calculated in the same way across categories, with one scan equaling one unit. So, if a single bottle's UPC is scanned, then one unit is added to the data. If a 6pk’s UPC is scanned, one unit is added to the data.
