Best practices for downloading visual charts, in order to use them in a PowerPoint presentation or include them in an email
To capture a visual element of a dashboard, such as a bar chart or a tree map, we recommend downloading it to PDF. Then, you can use your computer's snipping tool to capture what you need from the PDF image and copy/paste it onto a PowerPoint slide or an email. Downloading to PDF first will preserve the image clarity, and make the numbers "pop" more than if you snip directly from the computer screen. To download a chart to PDF, follow these steps:
If using Full Screen mode, exit out of full screen first. Then, you'll see this Tableau menu running across the upper right-hand side of the dashboard. Click the menu's "Download" option:
A pop up box will appear on the screen. Select "PDF":
You'll now see a different pop up, which gives the option of choosing what you'd like to include in the PDF. The default setting includes "This View", which will bring every part of the dashboard, including the filter and parameter controls, into the PDF:
Instead of downloading "This View", you may just wanting to download a single chart from a dashboard which has multiple charts. If so, switch the Include field at the top of the popup box from "This View" to "Specific sheets From this Dashboard". It will then give you the option to choose which chart/sheet you wish to download to PDF (in Tableau, charts are called sheets).
This example shows how to download the tree map from the Beer CMA's Style Analysis dashboard. The box has been checked for "Style Dollar Share of Mkt" in the pop up box, which matches the title shown in the header for that tree map chart:
"Style Dollar Share of Mkt" is selected in the pop up box
"Style Dollar Share of Mkt" is the title of the tree map chart
Lastly, switch the "Paper Size" setting to "Unspecified", and then click the blue Download button to bring the tree map chart into your download folder as a PDF:
One final note: when downloading a bar chart from one of the Ranker dashboards, you may want to reduce the number of rows in the chart before downloading, so that you aren't downloading an image with hundreds (or thousands) of bars and are only capturing the top 25 or 50 bars in the ranking. To do this, adjust the number in the Rank filter on the far right side of the dashboard (which shows you the number of rows in the chart) by clicking on the number itself, typing in the number of bars you want to include, and then hitting "Enter" on your keyboard:
