How Do I Request a Coding Update for a UPC Which Is Already Coded in the Circana Data?

If a UPC's properties have changed, we can help you request updates to its coding if you supply package images. It can take 3-7 months for Circana to complete updates for UPC's which are already coded/established in their database.

  • For items which are already coded and still in distribution but need updates to their coded values in Circana data, it's necessary to send images of the current packaging for each item to support@InfoSource.ai as email attachments, using our image sourcing guide. If a bundle of image files are too big to send as email attachments, try sending them in multiple emails or provide a link to a storage folder containing the images. JPGs are preferred, but PDFs are fine too. The primary requirement is that UPC codes and package details are clear, crisp, and readable.
  • Circana’s image requirements are fairly rigid, and they won’t accept images where the UPC code is disembodied from the package. Image requirements will differ depending on whether a 4pk/6pk of cans is being packaged in a cardboard box or with PakTech rings. When gathering images, please reference examples of acceptable imagery for each package type using the image sourcing guide.
  • If a UPC which was previously a standalone brand now represents a rotating SERIES or a SEASONAL rotation, please mention this in your email and send images for two of the flavors which will be included in the rotation, to prove that multiple flavors will be sharing the same UPC. If you only have imagery available for the first flavor in the rotation, please pair it with a sell sheet for the rotation and provide imagery for the next flavor as soon as it becomes available. It can take a long time (3 to 7 months) for Circana to complete coding updates for items which are already coded/established. This is a major downside of reusing existing UPCs when rolling out an entirely new brand. But, sometimes the properties of an existing brand/item will change, as with a switch from bottles to cans, and a supplier wishes to have the dollar sales generated by the cans linked to the same UPC as the historical dollar sales from the bottles.
